The Grammy Award winner Akon has come to Mumbai to record for Shah Rukh khan's forthcoming film Ra.one.

In a warm gesture, Shah Rukh Khan welcomed the popular R&B singer Akon in Mumbai in presence of the media on Tuesday afternoon. The singer is in the country on a short visit to record a song for SRK's super hero flick, Ra.One.

After making the media wait for almost 2 hours, Khan finally appeared on stage without Akon, much to the surprise of everyone. The actor chose to first speak a few words about the rapper and in a grand welcome, also played one of Akon's most popular numbers 'Smack That' for the media. And while all indulged in enjoying the super number, SRK couldn't help but do a little foot tapping and head banging on the song.

Soon after, Akon appeared on stage and sent the crowd ooh-ooing. What followed next was a traditional welcome where Shah Rukh's 'Ra.One' co-star Kareena Kapoor put the tikka on Akon's forehead and an Orchid garland around his neck. Just then, SRK in his funny style said, "When an actress of a film garlands you, you are married to the hero. So now Akon and I are married." Akon was also presented with a Lord Krishna memento and the sacred Bhagwad Gita.

Taking the credit for inviting Akon to sing for Ra.One SRK said that getting the international star on board 'Ra.One' was director Anubhav Sinha and music director duo Vishal and Shekhar's idea. Talking about Akon, Shah Rukh said, "I love his songs and the number 'Smack That' is my favourite. Akon is very gracious, I am not. I charge for everything but he's a great guy and his singing for my film is not a business deal but a friendly gesture."

Talking more about the film Khan said, "I can't give away much information as we still don't know what we are making," but on a more serious note he added, "It's a film about a good guy, a bad guy, a beautiful actress, a wonderful singer. It's a super hero flick and kids would love the film. But...," Shah Rukh quickly added, "It's not a kiddie film."

Akon will be singing and composing the song for Ra.One. Letting us in on what he plans for this special song Akon said, "Music in Africa and India is quite similar as artists from both the places believe in exploring and are open to experimentation. For the song in 'Ra.One' I plan to blend my style with some Bollywood style music."

Making their mutual admiration public, Akon and SRK took turns to sing a few lines of the hit track 'Smack That'. Akon also recited a few lines of 'Beautiful' and dedicated it to the gorgeous Kareena Kapoor, with King Khan playing an air guitar to everyone's amusement.

When a journalist asked SRK if he was following the trend started by Akshay Kumar of getting international singers to sing for Bollywood projects, SRK very sarcastically replied, "Yes yes, I always follow other actors. I have never done anything original." But later SRK turned into his peppy self and said that he always wanted to be a rockstar, "If you can sing and you look good, all girls like you," Khan said.

Kareena, who was meeting Akon for the first time said, "I am really happy about being able to sing with Akon. And I am looking forward to the party tonight at Mannat. It will be great fun."

After the press meet Akon was headed to Yash Raj studios where music director duo Vishal and Shekhar were waiting for him to record the song. But before leaving, the trio – SRK, Akon and Kareena, happily posed for the shutterbugs.

Akon, 36, and Shah Rukh recently met in Los Angeles. Akon, besides one song, will reportedly also form part of the cast. Directed by Anubhav Sinha, the science-fiction superhero hi-tech film is written by David Benullo (Shadow Man), cinematography by Ueli Steiger (The Maiden Heist), and music by Vishal-Shekhar.

Kareena Kapoor and Vivek Oberoi are also said to be a part of the film.

Shah Rukh reportedly plays a Miami software engineer Shekhar in the film, who as a video-game hero takes on his self-created techno-monster Ra 1. Shooting locations include Miami.

Grammy nominated Akon of Senegal background, born as Aliaune Badara Akon Thiam, has 40 Billboard Hot 100 songs.

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan is excited about his first superhero film Ra.One, which will also see him flying. And he says he is doing it for his children and hopes to succeed at the box office.

"The film Ra.One is a superhero film. There is a good guy, there is a bad guy, there is a beautiful girl, there is a wonderful singer and a fantastic director," Shah Rukh told reporters at a press conference organised to welcome the international R&B singer Akon at Sahara Star hotel Tuesday.

"It's a kind of film, a genre we guys haven't tried at 'Red Chilies'. On behalf of the whole team, I would like to try and I hope we succeed. It's a new thing for all of us, so we are giving it our best shot. Hopefully, we will be able to do what we are set out to do. I am doing it for my kids," he added.

The film is being directed by Anubhav Sinha and Kareena Kapoor plays Shah Rukh's love interest in it.

He said: "My superhero character is called Jeeva and he can solidify electricity. It's a concept we are trying to work on. Hopefully, visually it will be understandable too. It is a superhero film and I am going to fly in it."

Shah Rukh confirmed Akon will record a number for the film, but clarified that the R&B singer won't sing for the promotional song for his IPL team, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

"No, he is actually here to do a song for Ra.One. We would love him to do a lot of songs. We haven't developed the song for KKR, but if I do, I would obviously request him to do that.

"No, there is not any business deal with Akon. He has just been very gracious. You know, he is unlike me - I charge for everything. I will be really honest. When you see an artist or a singer, you truly realise that they want to do it for the sake of art. And what I love about him is that he only loves to work," said Shah Rukh.

Kareena was also present and welcomed Akon by putting tilak on his forehead and a garland around his neck.

Rap star Akon arrives in Mumbai today on a whirlwind tour and will be Shah Rukh Khan's special guest during his stay. The singer is here to record songs for SRK's film Ra. One, including one in Hindi. Says Shah Rukh, “Yes, Akon arrives on Monday for a rushed three-day visit. He will perform at the launch of a new product of a company whose energy drink I endorse, and then on Tuesday and Wednesday, he will record a song with Vishal Shekhar for Ra.One. There are two versions of the song, one in English and the other in Hindi, and Akon wants to sing in Hindi. Though he’s Senegalese by birth, he sings in different languages. I don’t see why he can’t manage Hindi. Akon will be adding his own bit to Vishal Shekhar’s composition. He is very participative - I love his songs.”

Shah Rukh hums one of Akon’s recent chartbusters and you wonder why he doesn’t sing for himself. SRK laughs, “No, I can’t sing. I did some lines for myself in Josh, but that was not real singing. If Akon can sing for me, why should I?”

Recalling his meeting with Akon, the actor says, “When I met him recently in New York for the first time, I was floored by his niceness. Such a big international star but so down-to-earth. I asked him if he would sing for me and he said, ‘anytime’. Everyone including Kareena Kapoor who has heard the song has loved it.”

Apart from the recording, there’s enough to keep Akon busy. “I will have him home for dinner and also arrange a quick press meet. I don’t want to put too much pressure on his time. After all, the man’s got to sleep too. However, it is just a three-day visit and I guess he will have a lot to do.”

The actor also wants to show My Name Is Khan to him. “Akon was in Cairo when MNIK released there. He saw the hoardings and has shown interest in watching it. Insha Allah, I’ll screen my film for him.”

By now its common knowledge that Shah Rukh Khan and Arjun Rampal are close friends. The duo have starred together in super-hit films like Don and Om Shanti Om. Shah Rukh even made a fleeting appearance in Arjun's home production I See You that released a few years ago. Now SRK and Arjun Rampal will once again be seen together in Shah Rukh's home production Ra.1 to be directed by Anubhav Sinha.

While Shah Rukh plays a super-hero kind of a character in the film, the buzz is that Arjun will be playing his nemesis. The sci-fi film which is expected to go on floors very soon features Kareena Kapoor as the female lead.

Kolkata Knight Riders have asked Manish Malhotra to design outfits for 96 cheerleaders.

Shahrukh Khan's Kolkata Knight Riders will stride into the Indian Premier League not wearing black and gold - as worn for the last two years, but dark purple and gold. His cheerleaders too will be a mix of foreigners and Indians and will sport the team's colours of dark purple and gold with a dash of lilac in it.

"Yes the colours of the KKR team and cheerleaders have changed," Shah Rukh told MiD Day last night.

Manish Malhotra who has designed the KKR cheerleaders' outfits (and the new KKR team jersey as he has been doing for the last couple of years) said, "There will be 12 cheerleaders in each match and I have been asked to design 96 cheerleader outfits as all cheerleaders might not be repeated in all the matches."

He added, "This year the cheerleaders' outfits will be according to the team's colours - brinjal purple with a hint of lilac and gold. There are no accessories except gold tassels hanging from the drawstrings of the shorts. The girls will be wearing special dull gold shoes. The jersey will be a long sleeveless sporty top with fitted long shorts below. The shorts will be above the knee.”

In 2009, NDTV Imagine and Red Chillies extended their partnership with a reality show, Knights and Angels where auditions for cheerleaders were conducted across the country with six girls being selected for the cheerleading squad. This year, Shahrukh along with KKR members handpicked girls from all over India and abroad. The girls wore black and gold jerseys with short skirts.

Last two years, Shahrukh’s Kolkata Knight Riders performed very badly. But this time shahrukh has devised a novel way to combat this problem.

During the programe’Main Bhi Coach’ which was in association with Nokia India, held in Mumbai, the star announced that he was keeping an open invitation to the public which can give suggestions on how to coach his IPL team.

Shahrukh is filled with positive vibes and is only supporting his team so that they can play hard and be successful this time.

The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) principal owner Shah Rukh Khan said on Saturday that it was not possible for every team to keep winning like Sachin Tendulkar, but promised the fans that his Knights would give their best to lift the Indian Premier League (IPL) this season.

Speaking at a promotional, the Bollywood superstar expressed his hopes and ambition for the KKR in the upcoming edition of the Twenty20 event.

The following are excerpts:

His expectations from this year’s IPL
Nobody likes to lose. Sometimes you lose to win again, you fall to rise higher. We have miles to go and promises to keep. We will try and lift the IPL this year. Even though we are in Mumbai, we would take the trophy to Calcutta. I would also like to see Mumbai Indians do well, as also the other franchises, but I want our team to better than the others.

If Dav Whatmore is a better coach than John Buchanan
John was a good coach, but I think communication (between him and the players) was a problem. We decided to change the coach in the best interest of the team. I felt sad to see him go. Probably, it was due to the language or the age factor. But Dav has worked with the Sri Lankan and Bangladesh teams and also been with the National Cricket Academy. So, communication has improved this time.

KKR’s performance in the last edition
I think we played well, but sport is like that. A loss doesn’t mean it’s a bad performance. Every team is not like Sachin (Tendulkar) who always wins. He is a genius. Maybe it was the multiple captains’ theory; maybe we worked hard but not hard enough… But I believe that our performance in the second season was better than the first because the matches we lost were by a close margin.

The colour of the jersey being changed
There were a lot of suggestions (following the team’s poor performance in the first two seasons). Juhi (Chawla) said ‘let’s change the colour’. But I don’t think anyone in the team is superstitious. I do pray, and we say prayers in the dressing room before every match. But the players know it’s about performance. Actually, when you lose, you want to change every thing and start afresh.

On IPL returning to India
There’s always a buzz when you are playing at home, it’s a wonderful feeling. I don’t want to take anything away from the other venues, but it’s a different feeling at Eden Gardens that you won’t get anywhere. I have attended World Cup matches and been to many venues, but that feeling is incomparable.

On the IPL-broadcasters impasse
I am not involved in the discussions. I hope it gets resolved because it will benefit both of us (the IPL and the media). It will be a great thing.

The Indian hockey team
I should have gone there (to the World Cup). I am thrilled with the way entire India has taken to the game. I think we should have more international matches and tournaments like this in India. I have played hockey. So I know hockey better than cricket. There has been a jump in our standards. I say once more, Chak de India!

Ahead of IPL season 3, Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan on Saturday invited the people to coach his Kolkata Knight Riders team and send in their suggestions for improving its performance.

"When we used to lose, I used to get inundated with messages, mostly suggestions. I feel sad when we lose, but you have to take all those losses with little bit of ease and a little sense of humour and all those messages and emails, I used to keep them," he said at the launch of the Main Bhi Coach programme in association with Nokia India in Mumbai.

"Keeping in mind peoples' habit of giving suggestions, I decided with the team of Nokia that this time we will launch something which would be called Main Bhi Coach which would officially give everyone a chance to coach KKR and suggest what should we do for our team," he said.

Shah Rukh said people could messages to 9664555555, and all these would be discussed with the team and the coach to see if the ideas could help in improving the team.

Shah Rukh said he is quite positive about his team this season.

"It happens in sports...one team wins and the other loses. I doesn't mean that the team losing is lazy or it doesn't want to win or it is a bad team. When one team competes, it competes to win. I won't say that we didn't work hard. Maybe our decision of multiple captains was not right, we can find excuses but the bottom line is that we worked hard, we played very hard but not hard enough."

"We need to play harder, we need to play tougher and we need to win this," Shah Rukh said.

On the controversy over the deal with Lux Cozi, he said he had kept in on hold because he doesn't want to hurt anyone with his decision.

"We wanted to have lot of local partners. If you have local partners it's nicer. Legally, as a company and in every way I thought it was above board.... it made some people unhappy and what happened over the last six months, I truly believe that lot of people love and support me and I don't want to hurt anybody and even our partners so we have kept it on hold because that's what some members in Kolkata wanted," he said.

The Kolkata Knight Riders have not won the title yet, but when it comes to creating brand value they are miles ahead of the rest.

In yet another marketing ploy, Kolkata Knight Riders have announced a ticket for Rs 32,000 per day that includes access to the super speciality enclosures at the Eden Gardens and to the post-match parties.

That means you can rub shoulders with the who's who of the cricket world and the Bollywood fraternity for a price that is almost five times expensive than the maximum priced ticket of Rs 6,500.

It is also reported that this marketing move has been devised in an attempt to maximise profit with the Eden Gardens' capacity nearly halved to 44,000 due to renovation.

There's going to be an extra buzz when the Indian Premier League is held in India after it was held in South Africa last year, said Kolkata Knight Riders' owner and Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan here today (6th March 2010).

"There's always a buzz in playing here and it's a wonderful feeling. The feeling one gets playing in front of 100,000 people at the Eden Gardens is incomparable," said Shah Rukh at a function to announce his franchise's continued partnership with Nokia India.

On replacing coach John Buchanan with another Australian Dav Whatmore, he said that communication with the players was the former's problem in the first two years.

"Buchanan was a good coach but we all partners took the decision to replace him in the team's interest. Communication with the players was his problem due to the language or age factor," he said.

"Never again!" Neil shudders at the very thouught of the way he was forced to misbehave on stage with Shah Rukh Khan....by Shah Rukh Khan himself.

Trust SRK to espouse irreverence. But Neil hasn't been able to get over it. Katrina Kaif and Bipasha Basu were in a state of shock after Neil Nitin Mukesh's outburst on stage against Shah Rukh Khan at the Filmfare awards.

They both rushed to Neil in panic asking him to apologize to SRK.

Two days after Neil Nitin Mukesh told co-hosts Shah Rukh Khan and Saif Ali Khan to just plainly and simply shutup on stage at the Filmfare awards at Yashraj films, the debate rages in the film industry.

Was the well-behaved blue-eyed-boy's aggressive impudence towards his superstarry seniors on Neil's home turf (he's known as a full-on Yashraj boy) for real? Or was it just an act?

To rewind a bit….at the Filmfare awards co-hosts Shah Rukh and Saif Ali Khan decided to take on Neil on stage, riling him endlessly. The final straw was the digs that Shah Rukh took at Neil's name.

“Neil, ” said Shah Rukh, “Why do you have three first names and no surname? My name is Khan. Saif too is a Khan. How come you have no last name?”

Neil couldn't take the slight to his family name. He not-so-gently reminded SRK that he ought to restrain himself because his, Neil's, father was sitting in the audience.

And then, horror of horrors, he told Shah Rukh to just shutup.

There was an uncomfortable silence in the auditorium.

Recalling the incident with an uncomfortable laugh Neil says, “I'm still shaking. Imagine me telling Shah Rukh Khan to shut up! But I did. That isn't all. At the end of the show I walked up to Shah Rukh and Saif and broke eggs on their heads.”

But relax. It was all part of an act.

“It was all planned by Shah Rukh Sir. I was told by the organizers the Moranis from beforehand that I was supposed to be part of Shah Rukh's act. I was supposed to reach early and rehearse for it.

But as luck would have it I had gone to town to pick up my parents and got stuck in the traffic. By the time I reached the venue there was only time for a quick briefing on what I had to do.”

Shah Rukh walked up to Neil and quickly told him the plan on stage.

Neil was aghast. “How could I say shut up to Shah Rukh Khan? I've never been rude even to my driver. But he insisted. He also told me to throw eggs at him and Saif at the end of the show. I begged and pleaded to spare me. But Shah Rukh didn't listen.”

Neil did his own on-the-spot improvisation on stage to spare himself the aggravated agony.

“Instead of throwing the eggs I walked up to Saif and Shah Rukh and broke the eggs on their heads. How could I throw eggs at them? Their fans would never forgive me!”

After the act Neil's shocked father has still not forgiven his son, although he has been told it was all in jest.

Says Neil, “Bipasha rushed to me and said if it was an act then it was really scary. Katrina stormed up to me after the show and told me to apologize to SRK, AT ONCE.”

Laughing nervously Neil relived the trauma of being forced to be rude to a hero he worships.

“I'm glad people finally got to see my mischievous side…But no thanks. Never again.”

It is old news that Karan Johar's MY NAME IS KHAN is re-writing history and creating box-office records in the Overseas market, wherever it has opened. And we will not give the details about how MNIK has broken all the records held by previous SRK movies in US or state that MNIK has already set a new high for UK by grossing £2,307,067 so far and still counting.

The whole of Middle East sees a new record as MNIK has collected a total of $3.3 million, till we last heard.

Coming to the numbers in the exotic African countries, in the unknown and new territory of Ghana, the country known more for its cocoa, MNIK is the first Hindi film to release and it has created a sensation by topping the box-office charts collecting $7,443. In the country of the pyramids, Egypt the film opened to a superb response collecting $42,362. Moving on to South Africa (entire region), MY NAME IS KHAN has notched up an impressive $177,119.

Moving on to South East Asia, MY NAME IS KHAN has mopped up $301,094 from Singapore. In Malaysia MNIK has $120,452 to show. In Indonesia, the film has grown from six to 14 screens and has seen a jump of 300 percent in week three.

Well, certainly and without even a hint of doubt, Karan, SRK, Kajol and Fox have done Bollywood proud by daring to take their film to many hitherto un-explored territories and then topping the charts as well, creating history. And maybe this will open the doors for other Hindi films which will follow suit and thus give the citizens of those country a chance to celebrate Bollywood.

Well, the world is certainly following Bollywood's (King) KHAN!

He calls himself a "rank outsider" of the Indian film industry and with nothing to lose says he was able to take chances.

Shahrukh Khan's risk-taking in his choice of roles got him noticed first as a TV actor and then in movies and he has become one of India's most successful actors of all time, recognised internationally for his performances.

Known as "King Khan" or S-R-K to his fans he is a master of action and has produced more than 60 films - a prolific record even by Bollywood standards.

Acting was not a path he had planned and he only turned to it when his hopes of becoming a hockey player were ended by injury.

Born to Muslim parents in New Delhi, Khan gained an honours degree in economics and began a masters in mass communication.

After the death of his parents he travelled to Mumbai, the centre of India's film industry.

Thinking he would try out acting for a short while, he told friends he would return home after a year, but after nearly two decades and with dozens of hit movies under his belt, they are still waiting.

Confident, suave and articulate Karan Johar was in the City recently on a private visit. He told Metrolife that he makes films on themes that are largely rooted in reality. “World realities excite me. While films mean a lot of entertainment, they must have an element of reality as well,” he says.

Is that why the bit in My Name is Khan where the hero was detained and checked inserted, much like what happened to lead actor Shah Rukh Khan (SRK) in real life? “Oh… that bit was inserted in the movie way before the incident happened. It was sheer coincidence,” he shrugs off.

Ask him what inspired him to make a film just for his mentor Shah Rukh Khan, Karan says, “Shah Rukh is like a father figure to me. He has seen me through good and bad times. He’s family to me,” he reasons. He feels that any movie made with utmost sincerity will go down well with the people. About Karan, SRK and Kajol working together, Karan says, “We’re most comfortable with each other. We know each other’s body language and respect our spaces. That’s what made us a team.”

On his most memorable movie thus far, he says, it’s Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.

“It’s very close to my heart. It’s the first movie I directed and I thought there was a lot of innocence about it,” he says and adds, “Dostana too was real and brought forth an
important aspect of reality.
